== 영어 운문의 한 형식 ==
Sonnet. 유럽의 정형시중 하나. 단어 자체는 '작은 노래'라는 뜻.

각운을 엄격히 맞추며, 르네상스 시절 이탈리아의 [[단테]]가 그의 연인 [[베아트리체]]에게 보낸 [[서정시]]들로부터 유래했다. 이탈리아의 [[페트라르카]]가 이탈리아 소네트를 발전시켰고, 이를 Thomas Wyatt경이 이탈리아 소네트를 도입한 이래로 [[셰익스피어]]가 영시 형식으로써 온전히 발전시켰다.

소네트 운율을 매기는 법은, 8개의 줄과 6개의 줄을 각각 한 묶음으로 놓는 방식과, 네 줄씩 세번이 나온 후 두 줄이 추가되는 방식이 있다. 즉 " octave + sestet "과 " quatrain + quatrain + quatrain + couplet"으로 놓는 두가지 방식이 있다. 전자의 방식은 이탈리안 소넷(Italian Sonnet)에서 선호되는 방식이며 압운은 abbaabba + cdecde(혹은 cdccdc)을 따른다. 반면 [[셰익스피어]]리언 소넷(Shakespearian Sonnet)으로 대표되는 English sonnet의 형식은 abab + cdcd + efef + gg를 따른다. (예: Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?) 단, English Sonnet에서도 스펜서 소네트(Spenserian Sonnet)은 abab + bcbc + cdcd + ee의 압운을 가진다.
보통 이탈리아 소네트가 압운이 더 자유롭고, 셰익스피어 소네트로 대표되는 잉글리쉬 소넷이 압운을 지키는 데 엄격하다.(예시 : Shakespear Sonnet 18. "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?")

대표적인 소네트 작가로는 페트라르카, 셰익스피어, 존 밀턴, 윌리엄 워즈워스 등이 있다.

모든 시가 그렇듯, 원어로 읽지 않으면 그 묘미가 떨어진다. 특히 소넷은 정형시이다 보니 번역하면 그 묘미가 더 떨어질 수 밖에 없는 점이 아쉽다.

이탈리아 소네트의 예를 들자면 밀턴의 소네트인 'When I Consider How My Light Is Spent' 을 볼 수 있다. 대략 이런 형태라는 정도만 알아두자.
굵게 표시된 부분이 압운이다. 소리내어 읽어보면 운율을 느낄 수 있다. 참고로 각 행은 iambic pentameter로 각 음절이 약강-약강-약강-약강-약강 으로 읽힌다. 거의 모든 소네트는 이렇게 읽힌다.

유명한 소네트로는 셰익스피어의 연가들과 피터 셸리의 [[오지만디아스]]가 있다.

셰익스피어 소네트의 예시를 들자면 [[셰익스피어]]의 소네트 116. "Let me not to the marriage of true minds"를 들 수 있다.

위 두 시를 해석해보면 알겠지만, 이탈리아 소네트는 9행째에서 시상의 변화와 함께 결론을 맺기 시작하고, 셰익스피어 소네트는 13행부터 시상이 전환되면서 결론을 내린다는 사실을 알 수 있다.
