케이티 페리의 네 번째 정규 앨범 PRISM의 리드 싱글로 미디엄템포의 파워 팝 장르 노래이다. 노래의 작사와 작곡에는 케이티 페리, 보니 맥키, 맥스 마틴, Lukasz Gottwald, Cirkut 가 참여했다.

평론가 들에게 좋은 평을 받았고, 이후 이 넘버원 싱글은 페리의 여덟 번째 빌보드 핫 100 1위 싱글이 되었다.또한 첫 주에 56만의 다운로드를 이끌어내며 Firework의 본인의 최고기록까지 깼고, 전 세계 15여 개국에서 1위에 오르는 등 상업적 성공을 거뒀다. 2016년 7월 기준 약 10,000,000건의 판매량을 기록했다.

사라 바렐리스의 Brave란 곡과 표절 시비가 일어났으나 유튜브에 Roar의 가이드 버전이 훨씬 이전에 녹음된게 밝혀지자 일단락 되고 Brave의 순위만 높혀주었다...

2014년 그래미 어워드에서 올해의 노래상, 최우수 팝 솔로 퍼포먼스 2개의 부문에 노미네이트되었다.

이 곡을 프로듀싱 했던 닥터루크는 이노래와 다른 곡들의 프로듀싱으로 2014년 그래미상 올해의 프로듀서, 논-클래식 부문에 노미네이트 되었으나 퍼렐 윌리엄스가 수상했다.

2014년 피플스 초이스상 가장 좋아하는 뮤직 비디오 ,가장 좋아하는 올해의 송 ,2013년 NRJ 뮤직 어워드 올해의 국제 노래상을 수상했다.
