세계 최고의 조연으로 불리시던 인물.
미국의 영화배우. 본명은 에임스 에프런 보그니노(Ermes Effron Borgnino). 코네티컷 주 헴든(Hamden) 출생.
이탈리아의 모데나, 카프리 섬에서 미국으로 이민 온 안나 보셀리니와 역시 이탈리아에서 미국으로 이민 온 카밀로 보그니노의 아들로 태어났다.
그가 2살이었을때 부모가 이혼했고, 어머니를 따라 이탈리아에서 살게된다. 1923년에 가족들이 재결합하면서 성을 보그니노에서 보그나인으로 바꾸고 코네티컷 주 노스 헤븐에 거주하게 된다. 하지만 그때까지 영화에 흥미가 없었다.
1935년에 고등학교를 졸업하자마자 미 해군에 입대해 1941년에 제대했지만 제2차 세계대전으로 인해 재입대하여 1945년까지 USS 렘버튼에서 근무하게 된다. 즉, 이 분도 2차대전 참전자. 때문에 훈장도 많이 받았다. 그리고 1947년 버지니아 주, 아빙돈에 있는 바터 극장에서 배역을 맡으면서 연극 및 영화에 발을 디디게 된다. 그리고 5번의 결혼 시작
1953년에 영화 지상에서 영원으로에서 악역을 맡아 알려지게 되었고 1955년작 마티에 주연인 마티 필레티로 나와 흥행 성공에 아카데미와 골든 글로브 남우주연상,뉴욕필름 영화제 남우주연상. BAFTA 영화제 남우주연상,내셔널 보드 리뷰(국내 비평상) 남우주연상같이 미국 영화제 남우주연상을 싹쓸이하며 이름을 알리게 된다. 마티 역은 그에게 딱이었는데 바로 마티 필레티가 이탈리아계 이민자였기 때문. 한국에선 80년대 인기 드라마 에어울프에서 주인공 호크를 돕던 도미니크로 알려진 바 있다.
2012년 7월 8일 로스앤젤레스 시더스-사이나이 병원에서 가족들이 지켜보는 가운데 심부전증으로 95세에 사망했다. 정말 인어맨이 떠나버린 안타까운 일. 게다가 스폰지밥 시리즈 성우진 중에선 가장 최고참이었다.
