2집 6번째 싱글 후보는 'Peacock'과 'Hummingbird Heartbeat'[1]였는데 뜬금없이 이 노래가 싱글 컷되었다. 그래도 피크 3위를 찍으며 마무리는 잘된 편.

잔잔하고 향수를 일으키는 가사에다가 폭풍감동을 일으키는 뮤비로 대중들에게 굉장히 호평을 받았다. 슬픈 가사와 뮤직비디오에 반해 사실 비트와 멜로디만 들었을 땐 가벼운 분위기.

떠난 남자친구를 그리워하는 가사는 자신의 실화를 바탕으로 한 곡이라고 하였고, 뮤직비디오는 과거 한창 사귀던 연인의 사망을 노년기에 회상하는 내용인데, 케이티가 I Kissed A Girl로 인기를 누리기 직전인 2005~2006에 사귀었던 배우 자니루이스가 2012년에 사망했기 때문에 그가 이 곡에 영향을 미친 것으로 추정된다.곡명인 The one that got away도, 영어권에서 많이 쓰이는 말으로 사귀다가 헤어졌는데 지나고 보니 정말 놓친게 아깝더라는 대상을 설명할때 쓰이는 표현이다. 이러한 여러가지 정황을 봤을 때 자니 루이스와의 관계를 반영한 노래임이 유력하다고 평가 받고 있다.

이후 어쿠스틱 버전과 래퍼 B.o.B의 리믹스 버전도 발표하였다.
