1914년 10월 27일 웨일스 글래모건에서 태어났다. 아버지는 선생이었고 어머니는 재봉사였다. 1933년에 낸 시 "And death shall have no dominion"로 유명해졌다. 제2차 세계대전 당시에는 징병 3등급으로 징병되지 않았다. 1950년에 미국으로 갔고 1953년에 뉴욕에서 사망했다.

웨일스 출신이었지만 지방색을 좋아하지 않아 웨일스인임을 드러내지 않았다.
밥 딜런이 그의 이름을 따서 지은 이름이란 얘기가 있는데 본인은 딜런이 마음에 드는 이름이라 고른 것뿐이라고 밝혔다. [1] 영미권에선 유명했지만 아무래도 시라는 문학적 특성상 한국에선 알려져 있지 않은 편이었는데 2014년에 개봉한 영화 인터스텔라에서 그의 시가 3번이나 암송되면서 유명해졌다.
