1 개요

영국의 싱어송라이터.
처음에는 80년대 초 락밴드 The Police의 베이시스트이자 보컬로 리더로 활동하며 당시 락음악의 주류였던 뉴 웨이브를 선도하였다. <Synchronicity>[1] 앨범을 마지막으로 그룹 해체와 함께 솔로 전향을 선언했다. 솔로 시절의 곡들은 뉴 웨이브를 벗어나 유로피언 재즈, 보사노바 등의 영향을 받았고, 담백하고 서정적인 분위기 덕분에 국내에서 많은 사랑을 받고 있다.

우리나라에 가장 잘 알려진 스팅의 곡은 폴리스 시절의 Every Breath You Take[2] 와 Englishman in New York[3], 영화 레옹의 OST로 사용된 Shape of My Heart, 그리고 런닝맨으로 유명해진 이광수 아웃Saint Agnes and the Burning Train 등이 있다.

3 새로운 시도

스팅은 데뷔 이래 실험 정신을 앞세워 늘 다양한 장르를 개척하곤 했지만 이번은 더욱 특별했다.

2008년부터 스팅이 뮤지컬 판을 겨냥한 작업을 진행하고 있다는 루머가 떠돌았다. 이듬해 그 루머는 사실인 것으로 밝혀졌고, 2011년에는 뮤지컬 캐스팅 오디션이 열렸다. <넥스트 투 노멀>로 유명한 브라이언 요키가 극본을 넘버는 본인이 작사 / 작곡하였다.
2014년 여름 뮤지컬 <The Last Ship>은 시카고에서 프리미어 공연을 선보였고, 같은 해 9월엔 미국 브로드웨이에 진출하였다.

그러나 안타깝게도 관객 수가 적었고, 12월부터는 스팅이 직접 무대에 오르기도 했지만 결국 작품은 2015년 1월, 단 4개월만에 조용히 내려졌다고 한다... 안습. 다소 무거운 내용과 후반부의 개연성이 떨어지는 전개가 원인이라고 짐작된다. 런던이 아닌 브로드웨이에 올린 게 잘못이었을 수도

4 여담

  • 정치성향이 상당히 진보적이다. 보여지는 이미지와는 달리 사회운동에 적극적으로 참여한다고. 한 번은 유럽 투어 중 오스트리아에서 공연하기로 예정했는데 하필이면 오스트리아 총선에서 극우정당이 다수당이 되는 바람에 대차게 취소했다고 한다. 하지만 그런 그도 우즈베키스탄의 독재자이자 학살자인 이슬롬 카리모프가 주최한 콘서트에 참여한 적이 있고 이때문에 우즈베키스탄 주재 영국 대사에게 '미쳤느냐'며 까였다.
  • 요가 매니아다. 매일 요가를 하는 것은 기본, 매 공연 직전에도 요가를 하며 심신 수련을 한다 카더라
  1. ↑ 해체 직전인만큼 멤버들 간 사이가 좋지 않았던 시기에 만들어졌는데, 역설적으로 더 폴리스 최고의 음반이라 불리우고 있다.
  2. ↑ 락 역사상 최고의 명곡 중의 하나로(바로 Synchronicity 앨범 수록곡이다) 수많은 후배 뮤지션들이 리메이크 하였고, 후에 퍼프 대디가 I'll be missing you 에서 샘플링해 사용해 다시 유명해졌다.
