1973년 발표한 폴 매카트니의 솔로앨범[1] 및 동명의 곡이다.

폴 매카트니의 솔로 앨범 중 가장 높은 평가를 받고 있으며, 판매량이나 인지도 측면에서도 가장 성공적이었던 앨범이다. 12월 달에 발매되었기 때문에, 1974년 영국과 호주에서 가장 많이 팔린 앨범으로 등극하였다. 미국에서는 차트 1위를 거머쥐었다.

1973년 폴은 《007 죽느냐 사느냐》의 주제가 "Live And Let Die"로 최고의 주가를 달리고 있었고, 이 때 즈음 폴 매카트니는 다음 앨범인 "Band On The Run"에 대한 구상을 하고 있었다.

매카트니는 당시 영국에 싫증을 느끼고 앨범의 녹음을 위해 당시 나이지리아의 수도인 라고스로 향했다. 그러나, 그 과정에서 8월 윙스의 리드 기타 멤버와 드러머가 탈퇴하는 일이 벌어졌고, 나이지리아 스튜디오의 상태도 안 좋았기 때문에 기본적인 녹음만 마치고 돌아와 런던에서 추가 녹음을 해야 했다고 한다.

앨범 전체적으로 편안하며 무난한 분위기이다. 다시말해서 비틀즈 시절 매카트니로 대표되는 "쉽고 익숙한 멜로디"의 전형인 곡들이 포진되어있고, 비틀즈 시절에 익숙한 팬들도 쉽게 접할 수 있었다. 평도 이 앨범이 가장 고르고 높은 평가를 받는 이유다. 팬들 사이에서 명반으로 추대받는다.

타이틀 곡인 "Band On The Run"은 감옥에 갇힌 사람이 탈출하는 가사를 담았고, 앨범 커버와도 관련이 있다. 대중들의 일상탈출정서를 자극해 크게 인기를 얻고 빌보드 1위에도 올랐다. 이 곡은 조지 해리슨이 비즈니스 관련 미팅에서 했던 말에서 영감을 받아 만들어진 곡이다. 두번째 트랙인 "Jet"도 상당한 인기를 얻었으며, 콘서트 레퍼토리에서 빠지는 일이 없다.

앨범 커버에서 그의 화려한 인맥빨이 돋보이는데, 마이클 파킨슨 (토크쇼 사회자), 케니 린치 (배우, 코미디언), 제임스 코번, 클레멘타인 프로이트,[2] 크리스토퍼 리,[3] 존 콩테 (권투 선수), 윙즈 멤버 3인이 출연한다. 이 커버는 나름 유명해서, 다른 매체에서도 패러디된 바 있다. 대표적으로 《마다가스카》의 포스터.

앨범 B사이드의 첫 곡인 "Let Me Roll It"도 존 레논특유의 느낌이 나는 나른한 멜로디에 인상적인 기타리프가 어우러진 숨겨진 명곡이며, "Picasso's Last Words (Drink to Me)"는 《빠삐용》을 촬영하던 더스틴 호프먼의 제안으로 만들게 된 노래라고 한다.

그리고 애플 레코드에서 내놓은 매카트니의 마지막 앨범이기도 하다. 매카트니의 리마스터링 시리즈인 'Paul McCartney Archive Collection'의 첫 앨범으로 발매되기도 했다.

2 한국 라이센스반

이 앨범은 오아시스 레코드를 통해 우리나라에서 라이센스 발매되었다. 그런데 문제는 이 앨범의 제목이자 타이틀 곡인 "Band On The Run"이 금지곡으로 지정당해 버린 것이다. 이에 따라 결국 오아시스 레코드 측에서 할 수 없이 이 곡을 지우고 앨범 제목까지 'Paul McCartney & Wings'로 바꾸는(!) 대담함을 보여주었다. 다만 초판은 곡이 그대로 실렸으며, 제목도 그대로 발매되었다. 금지곡 지정은 이후에 일어난 일이다.

    • 감옥에서 탈출하는 이야기. 여러 파트가 유기적으로 연결되는 굉장히 다이내믹한 곡이다.
  • 2. "Jet"
    • 폴 매카트니가 기르던 개 이름이라 한다. 물론 곡 제목처럼 전자 오르간 소리로 제트기의 느낌을 냈다. 이 곡의 이름을 딴 동명의 밴드가 있다.
  • 3. "Bluebird"
    • 비틀즈 시절 곡인 'Blackbird'의 후속버전 쯤 된다. 잔잔한 재즈 분위기가 난다.
  • 4. "Mrs Vandebilt"
  • 5. "Let Me Roll It"
    • 존 레논과의 디스전에 지친 폴 매카트니가 "내가 알아서 하겠다"는 메시지를 비치는 곡. 그러나 메시지를 떠올리지 않고 들으면 걍 사랑노래... 애잔한 분위기에 기타 리프가 멋있어서 공연 레파토리에 자주 등장하는 곡이다.
  • 6. "Mamunia"
  • 7. "No Words"
    • 폴 매카트니 - 데니 레인 공동 작곡. 존 레논과 같은 작곡 파트너의 부재로 아쉬워하던 폴 매카트니가 데니 레인에게 작곡을 독려하여 만들어진 곡이다. 1972년에 이미 완성되었으나 이 앨범을 통해 발매되었다.
  • (8). "Helen Wheels"
    • 영국판 버전에는 실려있지 않다. 원래는 미국 앨범에도 싣지 않으려 했지만 캐피틀 레코드 사의 간곡한 요청으로 싱글 곡이었던 이 곡을 앨범에 싣는 것을 허락했다고 한다. 1999년에 발매된 25주년 기념반에는 이 곡이 실렸으나 2010년 발매된 리마스터 판은 매카트니의 본래 아이디어를 존중하여 이 곡을 보너스 CD에 수록했다.
  • 8 (9). "Picasso's Last Words (Drink to Me)"
    • 매카트니가 자신은 어떤 소재로도 노래를 만들 수 있다고 하자 더스틴 호프먼이 제안한 소재인 파블로 피카소로 만든 노래.
  • 9 (10). "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five"
    • 피아노 리듬이 강하고 웅장한 곡. 한동안 라이브를 하지 않다가 2010년대부터 폴 매카트니 공연에 고정 레파토리가 되었다. 끝날때 오프닝 곡인 'Band On The Run'이 잠깐 나온다. 일종의 Reprise.
