세계에서 가장 큰 강. 그리고 세계에서 두번째로 긴 강. 강의 길이를 정확히 정하는 것은 매우 힘든 일이라 이견이 있긴 하지만 대개 나일 강을 가장 긴 강이라 본다(두 강 모두 길이가 정확한 것이 아니라서 언제든 1위를 빼앗길 가능성은 존재). 다만 수량 면에서는 아마존 강이 넘사벽. 나일 강의 40~60배 이상의 수량을 바다로 방출한다.

이름의 유래는 백인들이 들어왔을 때 그들을 공격한 여전사 부족을 보고 1에서 따왔다고 한다. 삼림이 우거진데다 다른 곳에서 찾기 힘든 진귀한 동물들이 많고 그 중엔 피라냐나 전기뱀장어, 칸디루 아수처럼 위험한 물고기도 있어서 함부로 헤엄치면 뼈도 못추릴 정도로 위험하다.

참고로 이 강의 하구쪽은 단순히 물길이 낮은 곳으로 흘러서 강이 형성되었다기보다는 과거 다른 대륙이던 땅덩이 둘이 맞붙는 바람에 바다가 강이 되어버린 케이스다(...) 지금도 너비는 거의 웬만한 해협급인데다 바닷물이 수십km 지점까지 밀려들어오는 어마어마한 기수역을 지니고 있다 이처럼 지질학적으로도 꽤나 흥미로운 생성과정을 거친 것으로 여겨지는데, 처음에는 로라이마 인근에서 대륙 서쪽으로 흐르다가(...) 안데스 산맥이 형성되면서 서쪽이 아닌 북쪽으로 흐르게 되었고, 다시 지형의 변화를 겪으며 최종적으로 동쪽으로 흐르게 된 것. 한 마디로 생성 당시와 현재를 비교했을 때 강이 흐르는 방향은 정반대이다.

정체를 알 수 없는 세계 7대 자연경관으로 선정되었다.
