1 개요


엘튼 존의 7집 Goodbye Yellow Brick Road의 9번 트랙. G로 구성되어 잔잔하게 진행하는 푸근한 발라드이고, 1940년대 재즈를 재현하는 듯한 복고적인 곡이다. 절-코러스, 간주로 반복하는 구성이고, 페이드아웃으로 막을 내린다. 곡에선 아코디언과 자일로폰이 같이 동반하는데다 항구와 파도 소리, 갈매기의 울음소리도 들려 바다적인 느낌을 받을 수 있다.

항구도시에서 지내는 선원들이 하숙집에서 매춘부와 즐거운 시간을 보낸 내용을 담았다. 푸근하고 밝은 곡의 분위기에 비해 상반되는 가사를 가졌다. 사실 곡에서 들리는 바다적인 효과들이 가사에서 크게 반영한 것이라고 할 수 있다.

2 여담

엘튼 존은 이 곡을 1973년 1월 자메이카 킹스턴에서 작곡했고, 가장 먼저 작곡된 수록곡 중 하나이다.

이 곡에선 기타가 사용되지 않았기 때문에 This Song Has No Title과 같이 데이비 존스턴이 참여하지 않은 곡이다.

수록곡들 중에서 유일하게 악기가 연주되기 전에 보컬이 먼저 나오는 곡이다. Harmony는 한마디를 연주하고나서 보컬이 나오지만, 이 곡은 악기가 연주되기 전에 보컬이 먼저 나온다.

미국의 싱어송라이터 존 그랜트가 이 곡을 커버했고, 2014년 40주년 기념 디럭스 에디션 Disc 2에 수록되었다.

이 곡의 삽화는 1950년대 미국의 유명 핀업 걸 디자이너 질 엘그렌(Gil Elvgren) 풍의 핀업 걸을 그렸다. 그림 제작을 맡은 디자이너 데이비드 락암은 질 엘그렌의 큰 팬이었다고.

2012년 리믹스 앨범 Good Morning To The Night의 수록곡 "Foreign Fields", "Telegraph To The Afterlife"에 사용되기도 했다.

라이브에선 가끔 불렀다. 1976년 9월 17일 스코틀랜드 에든버러 공연에서 처음 불렀고, 1977년 5월 1~7일 영국 런던의 Rainbow 극장에서 레이 쿠퍼와 진행한 피아노/타악기 2인조 투어에선 잠시 레파토리였다. 이후 22년 뒤인 1999년 2~11월 피아노 솔로 투어에서 오랜만에 불렀지만, 그 후로 부른 적 없다. 라이브에선 항상 피아노 솔로로 불렀고, 원곡처럼 밴드와 연주해서 부른 적은 한 번도 없다.
