엘튼 존의 7집 Goodbye Yellow Brick Road의 13번 트랙.

2 구성

E로 구성되어 경쾌하고 흥겨운 선율로 진행하는 로큰롤 넘버이다. 수록곡들 중에서 러닝타임이 두번째로 짧은 곡이고, 전반적인 템포가 아주 빠른 편. 곡은 전형적인 1950~60년대 로큰롤과 로커빌리의 사운드를 담았고, 각종 언급이나 헌정을 보인다. 인트로에서 들리는 백보컬 "aahhs"은 비틀즈 버전의 Twist And Shout에서 들리는 백보컬과 유사하며, 1키 올린 F로 더욱 빠르게 진행하는 후반부에서 들리는 간주는 프레디 캐논의 1962년 히트곡 "Palisades Park"에 대한 헌정이다.[2]

그리고 후반부 코러스에선 "your sister can't Surf"로 잠시 변형해 비치 보이스에 관한 언급을 보였다. 그렇게 F로 막을 내리면서 바로 다음 트랙 Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting으로 곧바로 이어지는 메들리 형식이다.

3 여담

역대 엘튼 존 곡들 중에서 가장 빠른 템포를 가진 곡이다.

데이비 존스턴은 곡에서 부분마다 들리는 백보컬 “ahhh-ahhh-ahhh-ahhh”을 각각 다른 톤으로 바꾸면 어떠냐고 제안하면서 거스 더전이 톤을 바꿨는데, 생각보다 상당히 잘 나왔다고 했다.

이 곡이 끝나고나서 바로 Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting으로 넘어가는 구성은 프로듀서 거스 더전의 아이디어였다고 한다.

제가 들어본 최고의 것들 중 하나였어요. 왜냐하면 이 곡은 아주 빠른 로커빌리 풍의 곡이고, 묵직한 인트로의 Saturday Night으로 바로 넘어가기에 특유의 묵직함을 제대로 전달한다고 생각했죠. 많은 사람들은 Saturday가 아주 빠른 곡이라고 하지만, Sister보다 빠른 곡은 없어요. - 데이비 존스턴, 2014년 3월 인터뷰

영국의 재즈 뮤지션 이멜다 메이가 이 곡을 커버했고, 2014년 40주년 기념 디럭스 에디션 Disc 2에 수록되었다.

이 곡의 삽화는 Sweet Painted Lady처럼 1950년대 미국의 유명 핀업 걸 디자이너 질 엘그렌(Gil Elvgren) 풍의 핀업 걸을 그렸다. 그림 제작을 맡은 디자이너 데이비드 락암은 질 엘그렌의 큰 팬이었다고.

1974년 2~3월 일본, 오세아니아에서 진행한 Goodbye Yellow Brick Road 투어에서 잠시 불렀다가 40년 뒤인 2013년 11월 8일 코네티컷 공연에서 불렀다. 2014년 2~3월 북미 투어에서 역시 40년 만에 선보인 I've Seen That Movie Too와 같이 앨범 40주년 기념으로 다시 부른 것이라고 할 수 있다. 몇 번 정도 부르다가 다시 모습을 감춘 I've Seen That Movie Too와 달리 이 곡은 셋리스트에 수록해 2013년 11월 이후로 한 번도 제외하지 않을 정도로 몇년 동안 꾸준히 부르고 있다.

빠른 템포로 진행하는 원곡과 달리 라이브에선 체력으로 인해서인지 템포도 더욱 늦추고, 5키나 내린 B로 부른다. 앨범처럼 이 곡을 부르고나서 바로 Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting으로 넘어가는 구성이다.
